Kayak to Mokolii (Chinamans Hat)

ree

Kayaking to Mokolii, known to most as Chinaman’s Hat, is an unforgettable adventure offering incredible views of the Koolaus and Pacific Ocean and an opportunity to connect with mother nature. This is one of my absolute favorite day trips. Located off the coast of Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, this iconic beach park is a must-see destination for paddlers and outdoor enthusiasts alike even if you decide not to make the journey out to the island. When kayaking, be sure to carry enough supplies, water, and sun protection, as facilities on the island itself are non-existent. I highly recommend placing anything you can't afford to get wet in a dry bag!

A Brief History of Mokolii (Chinaman’s Hat) Mokolii is a small, volcanic islet that emerged approximately 10,000 years ago during Oahu’s volcanic activity. Its distinctive conical shape has made it a recognizable landmark on the island’s northeastern coast. The name “Chinaman’s Hat” stems from its resemblance to traditional Asian conical hats. Historically, the island was used by native Hawaiians for fishing and as a navigational marker. Today, it’s a protected area, and efforts are in place to preserve its natural beauty and cultural significance.

Water Conditions and Tidal Considerations The waters around Mokolii are generally shallow, making it a popular spot for paddle boarding and kayaking. During low tide, it’s possible to walk out to the island, but be aware that tides can rise quickly, leaving you stranded if you’re not cautious. Always check the tide schedules before heading out, and remember to pull your kayak or paddle board far enough up the shore after landing to prevent it from being swept away once the tide rises.

Hiking to the Top and Scenic Views Once on the island, a short but steep hike to the summit rewards you with unreal panoramic views of Oahu’s windward coast, Mokoli’i’s lush landscape, and the surrounding ocean. The trail is steep, loose and requires some careful footing, especially near the top where you may need to utilize the ropes to pull yourself to the peak. The lookout offers a perfect photo opportunity and is a great spot to take a water break while enjoying the views.

Exploring the Hidden Cove For those seeking an easier route, hiking around the left side of the island leads to a hidden cove beach. This secluded spot is perfect for exploring, relaxing, or enjoying a quiet picnic away from the stresses of everyday life. If you're going to get in the water, make sure you are very careful as the tide is extremely strong.

Public Facilities and Access Visitors can access the surrounding Kualoa Regional Park, which offers public facilities like restrooms, picnic areas, and designated parking lots. It’s the perfect starting point for your kayak adventure to Mokolii.

Camping and Park Restrictions While camping is allowed in Kualoa Regional Park, it is regulated to ensure the preservation of the area. Campers must reserve the appropriate permits. Camping is an awesome way to extend your adventure, but you'll always want to check weather conditions and obtain permits beforehand to avoid any issues.

As always, please follow the leave-no-trace rule! Whatever you bring, make sure to pack out with you.
